In South Africa, Gender-Based Violence (GBV) is often referred to as the “Shadow Pandemic.” The statistics are staggering, but at Ubuntu Hope, we know that behind every statistic is a human face—a mother, a sister, a daughter, a friend.
For too long, the approach to GBV has been fragmented. A survivor might find a shelter, but lack the money to buy food. She might find a job, but lack the legal support to keep her abuser away.
The Reality:
Economic Dependence: Many women return to abusive partners simply because they cannot afford to feed their children.
The Justice Gap: The legal system is complex and expensive, leaving many without protection.
The Trauma Cycle: Without psychological healing, the cycle of abuse often repeats in the next generation.
Our Philosophy: Guided by the spirit of Ubuntu—”I am because we are”—we believe that when one woman is broken, our community is incomplete. The H.E.R. Project was born to fix the whole system, not just the symptoms.
We do not believe in band-aid solutions. Our three-pillared approach provides a complete continuum of care.
Focus: Crisis Intervention & Mental Health Before a survivor can build a future, she must survive the present. We provide the immediate psychological safety net required to process trauma.
Trauma-Informed Counseling: Professional psychological support to navigate PTSD and anxiety.
Safe Spaces: Collaboration with shelters to provide immediate physical safety.
Support Groups: “Circle of Hope” sessions where survivors realize they are not alone.
Focus: Economic & Physical Autonomy Financial abuse is a powerful chain. We break it by putting economic power back into the hands of women.
Skills Development: Practical training (e.g., admin, sewing, baking) to generate immediate income.
Financial Literacy: Workshops on budgeting, opening bank accounts, and accessing government grants.
Self-Defense: Building physical confidence and situational awareness.
Focus: Justice & Community Restoration means reclaiming one’s place in society as a free, dignified citizen.
Legal Advocacy: Assisting with Protection Orders, divorce proceedings, and navigating the SAPS and court systems.
Men as Allies: engaging men and boys in “Positive Masculinity” dialogues to change the culture that drives violence.
Reintegration: helping survivors build new, healthy social networks.
When you support The H.E.R. Project, the return on investment goes far beyond a single individual. We measure our success through the “Ubuntu Effect”:
1. Generational Change By healing the mother and providing her with economic stability, we protect the child. We are breaking the intergenerational transfer of trauma, ensuring the next generation grows up in a home defined by safety, not fear.
2. Economic Growth a financially independent woman is an active participant in the economy. By moving women from dependency to entrepreneurship or employment, we contribute to the broader economic health of our community.
3. Safer Communities Our “Restoring” pillar actively engages the community and legal systems to enforce accountability. By challenging toxic norms and enforcing the law, we make Centurion safer for everyone.
The H.E.R. Project is fueled by the generosity of people who refuse to look away.
